Quail Hill Trailhead

Time: July 27, 2013

Place: Quail Hill Trailhead, Irvine

Company: Wife and daughter

Highlights: A broken Kitchen stove led to a food outing, and since we were out anyways, we researched for a nearby short trek with nice far-out views, and we landed up at Quail Hill Trailhead in Irvine. This is a 1.8 mile trail in the open land with a small uphill elevation, and ideally suited for kids. It is beside the freeway, so its good to see zooming cars but bad due to the noise. However it is pretty barren, so it is not so great trail for those seeking trees and shelter. Surprisingly, Tontu walked (inclusive of 2 minor falls) the entire stretch because of which it took 1.5 hrs for us to complete!

Swami Narayan Temple in Chino Hills

Time: July 14, 2013

Place: Swami Narayan Temple in Chino Hills

Company: Wife and daughter

Highlights: We planned to visit the Swami Narayan temple since it was just an hour's drive away. I had heard a lot about Swami Narayan temples around the world and how architecturally great they were but today I saw them in my naked eyes and I was astounded. It almost seems too good to be true. There are intricate sculptures on the walls, roof, pillars and almost everyplace where the eye is used to see blank plainness! I also read about swami Narayan and came to know his true self. It is definitely worth a visit.

5th Wedding Anniversary in Mexico

Time: July 10-12, 2013

Place: Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Company: Wife and daughter

Highlights:

Preview: Considering that July 11th 2013 was our 5th wedding anniversary, a thought always existed that this anniversary should be made extra special. However, it never was clear on what would be the ideal celebration. Definitely an outstation trip was in order, but considering July was a vacation month, all travel-related would be extra costly. So, if hotel in Hawaii costed $500 in off-season, it costed $800 in July. Added to this was my job uncertainty and hence my "home" city. So "from" was unknown and hence did not book flight or car. One option was to drive across the Mexico border to any nearest beach resort but folks said that was too risky. So, had all options open until July 9th when I knew for sure that I will be in present "home city". Last minute research led to 'Cabo San Lucas' in Mexico, a 2 hr non stop flight journey which boasted of 'Land's end - El Arco de Cabo'. Thankfully, even though it was a last minute booking, tickets weren't too pricey, although it was still about 100 USD more per person. Anyways, got the ticket booked to San Jose Del Cabo from Orange County for 10th, with rented car in Mexico and resort booking in Quinta Del Sol.

Day 1: There were multiple sites for me to book the tickets, and the most lucrative one unfortunately errored out many times. So I ended up booking via expedia. Later I checked that if I had booked via airtran directly, I could have got an earlier flight (0830 hrs) for same price. As it happened, our 1301 hrs flight was delayed by 3 hrs. Added to this the fact that the taxi guy had taken a long route to airport instead of a shorter one (hence more pricey) had messed up my mind. After a long wait in the airport (thankfully Tontu got a pal to play ball) and another long wait for the flight to take-off, had an easy journey and we reached Los Cabos International airport in Mexico. Customs was easy and finally got a shuttle to Europcar rental agency.

I was told that the car rental insurance was expensive. Yet I had booked the car, instead of just relying on taxis. Added to this, the car was manual. So, it was my first experience with a manual car and left hand driving. Plus, we had lost that evening (had plans to see sunset). So all in all, I was grumpy.

Thankfully, drove safely from San Jose Del Cabo to Quinta Del Sol resort which is about 45 mins away at the start of Cabo San Lucas city. Nothing great about the resort, and value for money. Doesn't boast of private beach or 5-diamond style. Decent room service and accommodation.

Wifey and self stayed up till midnight to celebrate the anniversary day commencement.

Day 2: After complimentary continental breakfast, had booked an appointment with Grand Solmar group of resort for a free trip of their hotel (marketing), free lunch and free boat ride to see the natural arch. Unfortunately the free trip turned out to be a nightmare - it was more of a marketing gimmick to get us into a membership of sorts for vacationing in star resorts. What should have ended in 90 mins, prolonged to 3 hrs and we almost missed the last boat to the arch. Nonetheless, it was great visiting the Grand Solmar and its very impressive rooms and penthouses.

The arch itself was awesome and majestic. Very profound thought that this land was under the ocean many many years ago. Since this place marks the border of Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez, there are violent waves (good for surfing), and sure enough the boat rocked to and fro. It was a glass bottom boat, so saw some fishes too. Also saw Lover's beach (calm waves) and Divorce beach (dangerous waves). I was blue due to sea sickness but enjoyed the arch enough to see it as a dinosaur drinking water, which was spectacular, thanks to wifey for taking the picture.

Once back at the room, took some rest and enjoyed a cake and an ice cream. Then again headed out to the nearby Medona Beach for sunset but it is not a beach for sunset. It was more for leisure and for Tontu to play with sand. Then at night fall, enjoyed couple of Tequila shots (surprisingly, for the first time with wifey) at a local eat-out facing the ocean!

Headed back to the room and ended the day remembering the wedding day 5 years ago!

Day 3: Had enough time only to finish breakfast, pack, check out and drive to rental agency, and take shuttle to airport. Trip back was all on time, and we were back in our home by 4 pm!

Overview: Cabo San Lucas is a great tourist destination. Perhaps we could have stayed longer and did other things such as adventure sports (zipline, snorkeling, etc.) but with a toddler, we were satisfied with what we did. Our primary attraction was the El Arco and it provided the satisfaction in many-fold. This was a different kind of an expedition, in the sense that we never got time to spend in downtown, rather allowed ourselves to enjoy the Mexican local ambiance such as in a small-time eat-out on the beach. It was another of those trips where we did not get to see a single Indian in the tourist spot. Surprising!

Although it started grumpily, it surely ended on a high note, and we now not only have fond memories of Cabo San Lucas but also our 5th wedding anniversary!!

Legoland

Time: July 7, 2013

Place: Legoland, Carlsbad

Company: Wife and daughter

Highlights: An hours drive from our place, on the way to San Diego. It is an amazing resort theme park made entirely of Lego blocks. Excessive imagination and creativity at display! Also many rides that cater to all age groups. Again, Tontu had fun with helicopter, boat, sky-cycle, train all in one day. But the thing which she enjoyed most was the water park. A number of attractions in the water park such as water slide, water zoo and time spent in the 2 ft depth pools really made the day.

It wasnt as hot as 4th so it was not so tiring, and surprisingly Tontu didnt take a nap in the noon, as she usually does. That helped us cover most of the rides by 7 pm and allowed us to view the 4D picture. Definitely a place to visit with kids!

Disneyland

Time: July 4, 2013

Place: Disneyland, Anaheim

Company: Wife and daughter

Highlights: Disneyland is just one road from our home! It is just 10 miles on one single road! Yet hadn't been until now since we wanted to wait until Paavani was as nearer to 3 as possible (since it is free until 3) to better appreciate the characters. Finally decided on Independence day, although it was holiday season.

To tackle the crowd and lines, headed straight to the last section and worked from backwards. It was extremely hot but managed to still enjoy the parade and other rides. Paavani was extremely happy to have experienced train, boat, (elephant) airplane, carousel, etc all in one day, along with Mickey and Minnie character interactions! While she was asleep, wifey finished off the whoopy rides. Finally day ended with fireworks, but we ended up staying till 11 pm to finish the unfinished! Totally fun filled day!

Venice Beach

Time: June 16, 2013
Place: Beverly Hills, Venice Beach
Company: Wife and Daughter
Highlights:

A lazy Sunday led to late planning and departure from home. As late as 5 pm! Just as we reached Rodeo Dr in Beverly Hills, ready to take a walk in the Santa Monica Blvd, Tontu fell asleep. So whiled away the time near a park which had Beverly Hills inscribed. Since she was still sleeping and since it was getting late, we headed out to Venice Beach, eager to see the boardwalk, on which we had read so much about. Sadly, the GPS took us to the southern most point of the parking lot, and by the time we spent some time on the beach and realized where the boardwalk was, it was already 8 pm. Curiously, the shutters come down early on most of the shops and there is not much happening at about 9 pm other than few tourists loitering around, which is surprising because this seems to be a happening place, like the NY Times Square, where time never sleeps, and one would expect happenings to be continuously happening! So, other than a simple walk and light shopping on the boardwalk, didnt experience much in this supposed-to-be-hep place.

Irvine Regional Park

Time: Jun 8th 2013
Place: Irvine Regional Park, Orange
Company: Wife and daughter
Highlights:

Chanced upon this place while browsing internet and it turned out to be a beautiful, beautiful park and a nice weekend outing. It is a great place for kids because there is this small, cute train that takes you through the park for quite some time. Then there is pony ride, a small zoo, a nice stream in which kids can stand and feel the water flowing, a nice shallow lake in which boats (huge cycles, really) can be paddled and a variety of bike rides - meaning single-rider, twin-rider, family-of-4-rider, family-of-8-rider, etc. Add to this many barbecue places, kids' play areas, nature trails, low-lying-trees which can be climbed, etc. - it was wonderful. The website has more details.

Tirumala

Time: May 15-16, 2013
Place: Tirumala
Company: Wife, daughter, parents, MIL
Highlights:

Prologue:  The day we landed in India, we went to a TTD office in Jayanagar for fingerprinting and booking Rs 50 tickets. Since we were 5 adults + 1 toddler, I was not keen on taking our Alto. Other alternatives were to hire a taxi with a driver or rent a car (US-style) or take train/bus till tirupati and hire taxi there. Weirdo that I am, I pursued the option of US-style taxi. Not that I like driving so much that I want to rent cars to drive in frenzied traffic conditions in India, let alone Bangalore! Only reason was to save a few bucks (in hindsight - amounting up to only 40 USD!). In this regard, found zoomcar.in. What they had to offer seemed nice and straightforward. The US ‘rent-a-car’ verbiage is ‘self-drive’ rented cars. Because Indian ‘rent-a-car’ is nothing but renting a taxi with a driver. Saw zoomcar website, made few calls and booked an almost new Scorpio (under 1000 kms) for the trip. This was the biggest car I had ever driven in the narrow and traffic-infested roads of Bangalore. Definitely not worth the risk.

Day 1: Zoomcar car pickup was located only in one place in Bangalore – near Brigade Gateway in Malleshwaram (now they have expanded). So at 10 am drove my two wheeler all the way from Jayanagar to pick up location (after having lost directions twice completely, even venturing into Orion mall (wow, btw)), dropped it there and boarded the Scorpio. Trip from Malleshwaram to Jayanagar in this immense car was nerve-racking, to say the least. My drive in the two-wheeler on the previous day on Nrupathunga road was a shocker, so I used an alternate road. Finally reached Jayanagar at 12 pm. Had a bite of lunch and started the journey at 1 pm.

Journey was uneventful. Road is beautiful until Mulbagal and has a median in-between. For the first time in my life, I touched 140 kmph. Had a small stop-over near a local farm for more packed lunch under a tree.  Continued onwards to Andhra Pradesh. Had a small issue at the border because the system was not taking my DL since it is not a commercial license. But the officer was able to get a way through it. Rest of the journey was uneventful, except that by the time we climbed the mountain, it was already nightfall. So tontu could not see the climb. Reached Karnataka Guest House at about 8 pm, had a quick bite of dinner and retired in the sweltering heat.

Day 2: Got up at 6 am, and headed out to Swami Pushkarni for a bath. Tontu’s first outside bath, and she enjoyed it. So much that she didn’t want to get out of it. But there were some tantrums on silly topics. Nevertheless, we headed to the Rs 50 queue at 8 am. This was the first time for Tontu and I was fervently wishing it to be quick and smooth, like so many of the previous trips. Unfortunately, this was the longest I had ever seen. Even the Rs 300 queue was long. After a certain point, the queue just stopped moving and we all sat down on available seats. Then it moved again and stopped, this time there were no seats. So we were stuck there, standing in the middle of 100 other sweaty people with no idea when it will move again. Tontu is getting sleepy but still no tantrums in the queue. Then all of a sudden, the queue moves and it moves so fast that within 5 mins, we are inside the santum sanctorum. And for the first time in my life, there is no rushing and pulling and pushing inside the sanctum sanctorum. It is a simple queue that is moving just like any other temple in India! We get a glimpse of Lord Venkateshwara and too soon, we are out of it!

By the time we came out of the temple it was noon. We rushed to Udupi Mutt (who were gracious) for a quick lunch (elders had fasted since morning for the darshan) and started off to Bangalore at 2.30 pm. For most part it was uneventful except for once when I tried to overtake from left and almost risked it all. Very soon, we had reached Mulbagal Mutt. Got blessings from Sripadharaja Swamy, and once more headed towards Bangalore. Reached Bangalore by 7.30 but took almost 1.5 hrs to reach Jayanagar home. Returned the car next day to zoomcar HQ.

Epilogue: This trip marked a first of many. Self-drive car. Top-speed. First TTD trip (queue, darshan, Tirumala climb, outside bath, etc.) for Tontu. And first trip for Tontu without a single snap being taken! Thankfully, by Lord Balaji’s grace, nothing happened to the new car – no scratch, no dent or anything. By the time I came back, I was quite confortable driving it in Bangalore!

Hubli

Time: May 11-13, 2013
Place: Hubli
Company: Wife, daughter, parents  (returned with them plus relatives-in-law)
Highlights:

Day 1: Extreme health issue previous night made this trip almost a non-entity. But woke up at 4 am and decided to go with it. Took the car to Majestic and parked it at the railway station. Took the (again L) non-AC janshatabdi express to Hubli at 6 am. Remembered the previous trips on this train. This train works in tandem with other trains in a clock-work precision. Meaning, it arrives at Arsikere station and waits for an oncoming train. Once that train arrives at Arsikere, this train departs. Each time I have been on this train, I have noticed that this waiting time is just 2-3 mins. Same thing happens in Birur. This could be because of the single track but even so, this precision in timing is remarkable.

Reached Hubli on time at 1.30. Took it easy by having lunch at the new station café. Pretty cool setting, in fact. Checked in at the Chalukya Hotel. Relatively nice room and reasonable rate. Siesta. Wifey met pals along with offsprings. After a long wait, went to the wedding hall (wifey cousin wedding) for a quick bite and religious ceremonies. Retired early.

Day 2: Wedding day. Long hot day. Thankfully wedding hall and hotel were nearby. So did multiple trips to kill the time, and for change. Met lots of relatives, and most of them were seeing Paavani for the first time.  Paavani was tongue-tied, as expected. But tolerant of the crowd. Thankfully, it ended. Again, a siesta before heading out to the station. Comfortable train back home.

Day 3: Yeshwantpur was the place to get off, which we did. Then we hopped onto another train on its way to Majestic, since that is where the car was parked. Traveled in General Compartment, after a really long time. Not sure if I had traveled in GC before, either! Anyways, reached home at about 7.30. Car overnight parking charges in Bangalore railway station was 240 per 24 hrs.

Overview: Although we attended the wedding, this wedding was not the reason why we visited India at this time. This wedding just happened to fall in the same time period of our visit – for good or for bad. Good because we got to meet all the relatives. Bad because it added one more out station trip to our already 2 unmissable trips!

Chennai

Time: May 7-9, 2013
Place: Chennai
Company: Wife, daughter, parents, MIL
Highlights:

Day 0: Left to Chennai in train. Train departure at 11.45 pm but even at 10 pm, there was no assigned cab-drop. Last minute excitement, but all’s well in the end. Daughter sick during the journey to the station in the cab. Wondered if it was a good idea to invite the parents, considering all the trouble with travel and Chennai heat. Had invited just so that they can spend more time with Paavani in the short 3 week duration. Bad planning was to take a suitcase with an uncomfortable pull-tag. Lugging it up all the way up the bridge and down the bridge was a big turn-off. If only there was a ramp in the railway station.

Day 1: The night journey wasn’t all that heat-ed! Since there was no AC tickets available, had reserved the regular second sleeper. Once arrived in Chennai at about 8, the heat hit us! Added to this was the annoying pull-suitcase and the challenge of the language especially trying to identify the waiting cab driver. Finally found him, and his – thank God – AC car!

Arrived at the guest house. Amenities at the guest house of previous company were better compared to present guest house. Anyways. Per plan, had booked a hotel within walking distance for the parents and in-law. So walked to their room after breakfast and spent time with them.

Back for lunch, got ready and visited the OFC for the biometrics scheduled at 3.30 pm. The guest house chosen was such that it was in between the OFC and PAI centers. Despite that the autowallahs were bargaining. One guy agreed for 80, and begged for 120! It was a reverse bargain! Finally paid 100. Biometrics was done by 4.30.

Then, all of us left to Marina beach at about 5.45 pm. It was way too crowded and also too far to walk to the Bay of Bengal. All ventured into the water except me and wifey. After some snacks and sand and sweat, went shopping on the beachfront. More sand, more sweat.

Finally, headed back to the GH, amidst wailing child and an over-packed autorickshaw. Retired for the night after a small dinner. Needless to say, each trip out of the AC GH room necessitated a bath!

Day 2: The big day. Got up early. So went to the parents’ hotel to spend about an hour. Had breakfast in a small 10 by 10 outside café. Typical Chennai breakfast. Met Prashanth for a short duration at the GH since had to return some of his stuff.

PAI interview scheduled at 11 got done by 11.30, after the usual rigmarole of frisking, documents check, waiting in many lines and finally the interview. Thankfully, the interview was not a big deal and it was smooth. Back in the GH by 12. Had a short nap before having lunch and headed out to the station.

Regretted not having booked an AC chaircar even though had tickets in RAC. Had to suffer about 4-5 hrs in the Chennai summer heat until nightfall. Too many people, too few seats, too loud TV!

Heavy rains in Bangalore just when the train stopped. Finally, got the cab and reached home by about midnight.

Overview: Hope this is the final trip to the Chennai US Visa consulate. If only, there was a consulate opened in Bangalore! Really tired of visiting Chennai and the consulate every time I visit India…

India 2013 Vacation

Time: May 4, 2013 – May 27, 2013
Place: India (various cities)
Company: Wife and daughter
Highlights:

Prologue: Thought got initiated for India trip around Feb. Booked tickets in March. Started jotting down things to do, and looked forward to it eagerly!

Day 1 (4): Left the house at 9 am. Took the car to LA and parked it near the airport with ‘Park Place at LAX’ for a reasonable rate per day. In the airport at 10.30. Boarded the Cathay Pacific flight which departed LA at 12.55 pm to Hong Kong – a long 14+ hr journey. Thankfully Paavani was just fine, playing with the touch screen TV. Saw Life of Pi.

Day 2 (5): Reached Hong Kong. Had a brief lay-over time and relaxed at the airport. Boarded the flight to Bangalore. Pretty basic flight. So had to keep Paavani occupied by using the ipad. Since it was a short 5 hr journey, it wasn’t too bad.

Day 3 (6): Landed in Bangalore at 2.40 am. This had been the longest stay away from Bangalore ever – over 2 years. Tontu’s grandparents at the airport to welcome us. I drove back from airport to home. Surprised at myself that even after 2 years, I hadn’t forgotten the road sense and the stick shift. Road from airport was in total mess considering metro construction, and by the time I reached home, my knees started hurting due to the constant clutching! Yapped all day – Tontu enjoying the company of all the grands and even the great grands and uncles and aunts. Went to TTD office to book tickets for Tirumala.

Day 4 (7): INR 70 for Idli and Vada?!! Shocking! Anyways, visited Dad’s new apt in Uttarahalli (under construction). Went to CTS office to collect the visa docs. Had booked the train to Chennai at 11.45 pm. At 9.45 pm called the taxi guys to check why no one had responded yet. Seemed there was no one assigned! Finally one guy said he is on his way. Reached station at about 11.30 pm. Had asked Tontu grands to join us to Chennai trip so that they can spend more time with her. But in the sweltering heat, was wondering if it was a good idea.

Day 5-6 (8-9): Chennai

Day 7 (10): At home.

Day 8-9 (11-12): Hubli

Day 10 (13): In-law’s place.

Day 11 (14): Spent a nice 2-3 hr in J P Park in the morning – one of my recent favs in Bangalore. On the way back, got a call from office and unfortunately I had not got the official laptop with me. So I was forced to return back to Jayanagar to send a mail before EOD. Original plan was to stay over. So, for the first time in two years, stayed overnight away from wifey and daughter!

Day 12-13 (15-16): Tirumala

Day 14 (17): Dropped MIL at the airport since MIL was headed out to Dubai. Bid adieu.

Day 15 (18): Spent time with friends.

Day 16 (19): Prep for the morrow’s function. So visited dad’s apt again with one car load of stuff – still seemed lot of work needed to even host audience in this half constructed house. Even visited the 4th T block Mutt [after 2 years!] to get some Godly stuff!

Day 17 (20): Dad’s new apt Gruhapravesham. Got up early, left early, priests arrived early. With great Veda chanting, the ‘God’ entered into the apt. Did lot of chores around the house, and even driver-work! Relatives and guests started pouring in. Tontu scrutiny and interviewing began, what with many folks seeing her for the first time! Pooja ended early but lunch was delayed. So did general chit-chat with all. Lunch and post-lunch time seemed to fly and all guests left. Tied up last few ends of the house and left for the day. More chit-chat at relatives’ places. Glad that even my great-grands could attend the function. Had to air-lift them via a chair for two stairs!

Day 18 (21): Visited my apt in HM Sepia – for the first time since construction completed. In the evening, went to a nearby childern’s park. Unlike in US parks, Tontu had wait for her turn to play the swing!

Day 19 (22): Visited Tontu’s first pediatric doc for general check up. Went to McD’s on her insistence!

Day 20-22 (23-25): Shopping in Jayanagar 4th Block. Had variety of outside food that only Bangalore makes best. Visited few more pals and relatives. Completed last few activities scheduled to be done in Bangalore. Also visited our favorite park near home which wifey and I used to haunt for our walks, went to Mutt and Sai Baba temple on Thursday – just the way we used to on all Thursdays. Also experienced one terrible day when, after tremendously hot day, it rained like hell in the evening, bringing down 126 trees, and hence shutting down the electricity. It took 24 hrs for electricity to come back. Unfortunately there was no water too, and tankers wouldn’t come without electricity - because they needed electric power to haul the water to overhead tanks. So, there was no power, no water and it was sweaty hot!

Day 23 (26): The day of departure. Last minute shopping, re-packing into suitcases, re-distributing the load, etc. Had booked for an Indica with a luggage-carrier from taxiforsure.com. But when the car finally arrived, it was a sedan. So many suitcases would never have fit in a sedan. Back and forth heated discussion didn’t lead anywhere. Thankfully, flight was delayed by 50 mins. Took our car too along with the taxi. About 10 kms from airport, our car – which I was driving with mom – decided to have a flat tyre. Meanwhile the taxi had already reached airport, and dad and wifey were waiting at the airport, with tontu sleeping on wifey shoulder. Like a God, one taxi driver en route to airport stopped and helped me and my begging mother to take us to the airport. Once we reached airport, I generously tipped the ‘God’. At the airport, wifey was nauseous what with the entire luggage and the sleeping toddler. Then we realize that toddler shoes were in the taxi. So we call up the taxi and he agrees to come over to return them. Then toddler wakes up and she has a huge insect bite on her temple, and she is all squeaky. Talk about being tired before a 24 hr flight journey even started! Flight gets delayed further – almost 1.5 hr now, eating away most of the bare 2 hr transit time we had in Hong Kong. In the midst of all this waiting, I hear that Mumbai Indians have won the IPL tournament and Sachin has retired from T20s. Then I call dad to know that he is safe with the car, repaired with the help of relatives and cousins, and on the way back. I am hungry, and I buy few slices of garlic bread. Another toddler beside me is staring at me so hard, that I offer – and she takes them all. Tontu starts wailing that she needs it! Phew. What a night. Finally got on the flight and we are on our way.

Day 24 (26): At Hong Kong airport, we are escorted and we run through security and lounge to our gate, and aboard the flight to LAX. It is a pleasant journey. 8 hrs Tontu played all by herself, and finally slept for the last 4 hrs. Slight trouble at the end of the journey and she wanted to go home, but immigration interview was smooth. Shuttle back to parking lot, and we were driving back to home. The Civic seemed luxurious compared to Alto, and I surprised myself being comfortable again with US driving after 3 weeks of driving in India on the opposite side. Arrived safely back home and got back into the usual routine of getting milk, groceries, fast-food, etc. within the hour!

Epilogue: For many reason, this was a much needed trip. More for the sake of Tontu than me and wifey. We accomplished most of what we wanted to do in Bangalore except for a few activities and meeting few other friends. It felt nice to re-bond with relatives and friends, and get a refreshing feel of "Namma Bangalore" life once again! Apart from this, it also marked completion of our 'Around the world' trip!! [India (Bangalore) - Qatar - USA (Washington DC - Boston & Nashua - Orange County - Los Angeles) - Hong Kong - India (Bangalore)]

Catalina Island

Time: April 16th 2013
Place: Catalina Island (City of Avalon)
Company: Wife and daughter
Highlights:

Since Catalina Express was celebrating its 30th birthday, a free ticket was being gifted to all those who took the cruise on their birthdays throughout 2012 until April 30th 2013. Since both me and my wife share the same birthday, the free cruise became extra special! So this trip was planned about 6 months ago when we first came across this discount flier!

Since I couldn’t take the day off (as I had to conserve my leaves for the upcoming India trip), we planned to take the 2 pm cruise from Long Beach to Avalon and return on the 7.30 pm cruise. Left home at 1, reached Long Beach bay at 1.40, boarded the cruise at 2. Got the pamphlet and was surprised to see many freebies for birthday folks - ice cream, golf, shopping discounts, bowling, etc.

Unfortunately though, the cruise was extremely disturbing. Thanks to high winds and waves, there was a lot of seasickness. A very unpleasant experience. First time experience in life, though – although I had heard about it a lot and seen it on movies too. Thankfully it was a short 1 hr ride.

Kinda chilly but gradually became warmer. Enjoyed some of the freebies, but otherwise relaxed on the sand dunes, and let Paavani enjoy herself. Return journey was better but still traumatic.

All in all, a memorable trip, with all the freebies making the birthday that much more special for both me and my wife. But to be fair to the island, it definitely is worth a visit for more than a weekend to enjoy all that it has to offer.

Irvine to Costa Mesa

Time: April 8th, 2013 till date

Place: Costa Mesa, California

Company: Wife and daughter

Highlights: Moved to another neighboring city of Irvine. Did all the shifting between wifey and self, and with a toddler toddling around us! Quite a laborious experience but somehow managed! Got a nice house, nice quiet balcony (balcony in Irvine was facing a main road where cars used to zoom at 60 mph which gets quite noisy especially when it rains) and significant less rent. Costa Mesa is not as posh and luxurious as Irvine nor do the records indicate that it is as safe but now the office (same Santa Ana office) is just 2 miles. Adding one more chapter to our stay in US…

To The West Coast!

Time: March 30th, 2012 to April 7th 2013

Place: Irvine, California

Company: Wife and daughter

Highlights: Quit Infosys and joined CTS. Hence the relocation. Exactly 3000 miles diametrically (in the US map) away from current location (Nashua). City of Irvine was mind-blowing. Palm trees everywhere, wide roads. It was like a tourist city. Reminded me of Mauritius. Also came to know that it is a fairly new city, developed in 1971 by a realty company by the same name! Plenty of shopping plazas, luxurious apartments and extremely safe. So, although work location was in Santa Ana, a neighbouring city, preferred to stay in Irvine. Stayed in Avalon Irvine, after initial 2 weeks in Homestead. Had to move out of Avalon Irvine due to rent increase after the annual contract. Enjoyed the 1 year stay in Irvine, and will always cherish it…

Utah

Time: Dec 25 to 30, 2012

Place: Arches, Four Corners, Monument Valley, Bryce, Zion, Las Vegas

Company: Wife and daughter

Highlights:

I don’t think we have ever planned any vacation so hard and so long. This may be understandably because it is the longest vacation we (the three of us) have ever undertaken. Starting from different options on how to take leaves to make the best use of Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays to different vacation locations bearing weather conditions and cost-effectiveness (as compared to making the trip on non-holiday season). Added to this, are the variety of websites that showcase the flight rate deals, hotel deals and car rental deals, and the bundle packages. And then there was also an option of renting an RV (which I had explored last year same time too but the idea had flopped then and this year too).

When to take the leaves considering 25th and 1st were holidays, both Tuesdays, was a big question mark. The number of leaves had to go hand-in-hand with the vacation location and the cost-effectiveness of that vacation. It was like an algebraic equation with multiple variables (when to take leaves, cost-effectiveness, vacation location bearing weather condition, road-trip vs flight vs train, RV or not, no drive more than 4 hrs at a stretch to accommodate our 2-year daughter, etc.) and objective of the exercise was to solve the complex problem.

We started off with identifying the top places we want to see in US, and started fitting it in the equation. After much debate, we locked on to the most famous national parks in Utah (Arches, Monument Valley, Bryce and Zion). Summer, of course, is the right season to see these parks. But we were not sure (during planning phase), if we would be so near as now to Utah. Also, it was mentioned in various websites that although winter is off-season, it has one of the spectacular views since these parks would be covered with snow. And anyways, summer is preferred so that visitors could hike. With a toddler, we weren’t too keen on hiking anyways. So winter for these parks suited us.

Now that we had locked down on the ‘vacation-location’ variable, next toughest thing to decide was on the itinerary. We have spent many weekends and weeknights deciding and deciding on the optimal route. There is a direct flight from LAX to SGU which is an hour away from Zion. So, taking a car at SGU and doing the loop of the 4 parks seemed the optimal route. But there was another variable that had to be solved – no drive to be more than 4 hrs at a stretch to accommodate Paavani else it would be difficult to handle her. Arches seemed farthest of all parks, and yet it had to be seen. For we didn’t want to go to Utah again and again. Yet, this was the best of all plans.

This led to discovering nearby airports like Moab, Grand Junction, Denver, Salt Lake City, Flagstaff other than St George (SGU). Amongst all of this, the best route would have been to fly from home (SNA or LAX) to Moab, rent a car and drive down all the way to SGU and fly back home. However, after completing the itinerary for couple of hours, I was told by many websites that there is no rental car in Moab airport. (True enough, other than a strip of runway, there is nothing in Moab that can be called airport). So, the whole idea flopped.

Googling led to a website who had done similar trip as us but had taken the train from Chicago to Grand Junction and then they had driven down. However, this was not a great option since it was taking days for us to get to Grand Junction in train and multiple stop-overs from LAX.

Further research led to a cost-effective itinerary – SNA to SLC and then driving down all the way to LAS, covering the targeted parks, even though there was a drop-off charge for the rental car. This solved all the variables. Ideal would have been to drive only till SGU and take the direct flight back to LAX since we didn’t want to see LAS nor drive all the way to LAS but the deal was irresistible. So here goes:

Day 1: Had booked the cab for Home to SNA at 0630 hrs and he was right on time. We could sleep only at 0200 hrs and had to get up at 0500 hrs to be ready by 0630 hrs. 10 mins to airport. 0800 Delta flight to SLC. Reached SLC at 1100 hrs local time (4 hr flight). During the flight journey, saw snow-capped mountains and white blanketed desert area. Was mesmerized by it. Not sure where had seen such view last time around or if had seen at all before. Only plan after landing was to reach Moab by nightfall. So took it easy. Upgraded rental car from Corolla to Camry for better traction. Liked it, in the end with all its features – USB port, Aux cable (bought one during trip to utilize feature!), in-built telephone, etc.

Initial plan was to stock up on frozen food, milk and other toddler stuff in SLC and then start journey to Moab but since it was Christmas, no shop was open except fortunately a Starbucks on which we survived the entire journey to Moab. And what a journey it was to Moab. Unbelievably scenic; winding across snow-capped mountains and valleys. It was as if we were in Switzerland (comparing although never been to Swiss!) We must have taken over 200 snaps of just the drive! Truly folks in SLC have a great view.

As the road tapered towards Moab, the scenery around changed. It was more of a desert filled with snow. The last 30 miles was a single-lane road but I realized later that it would be single-lane road for rest of the trip until we were on our way to LAS! Finally by 5 pm, after 4.5 hours of journey, reached Moab’s Super 8 Hotel, right opposite Denny’s which was open all day even though it was Christmas. After some discussion, changed the next night’s hotel to a hotel which was closer to 4 corners monument, to avoid the long ride. Relaxed and retired for the night.

Day 2: Had no major plans for the day other than visiting Arches which was just 4 miles away. So woke up late, had late breakfast in the hotel, and left at 11. Paavani had a tummy upset and that concerned us since it was just the first day of the trip and she was not having any of the outside food. Only solace was the rice we had got for her to cook in the microwave in each hotel to be served with yogurt.

Entry to Arches was scary since the slopy road was filled with snow. But once we ascended, road leveled out and the 17-mile road offered wonderful scenery. All around we could see the small arches. Parade of elephants resembled Lord Ganesha, there were many Balancing Rocks, views of North and South Windows were good although we could not trek near it since Paavani had dozed off. And since she had slept, I ventured alone to the Landscape Arch which was about a mile’s trek in the desert snow. Then when I came back, Paavani was up and about, eager to walk in the snow. So we hiked again in the snow and visited the Tunnel Arch. It was most gratifying. But it was extremely cold. So headed back. Exited Arches by about 4 pm.

Had lunch at McDonald’s in Moab and drove 2-3 hrs to Cortez, Colorado. Most of the journey was in the dark and I wish we had left early – one to have experienced the obvious scenic views that one could sense lay beyond the road and two to avoid the risky road journey. It was snowing and a single lane road with gusty winds and pitch dark night all around! Thankfully, reached Cortez at about 8 pm and stayed in another Super 8 Hotel. Thankfully, Paavani was back to normal.

Day 3: Since it was a long ride today, left early – at about 9ish after a good breakfast. Reached 4 corners monument at 10. It was surprising to see the snow disappear in that 1 hr journey, although it was terribly cold due to the wind. This spot marked the only place in USA where 4 states converged into one point – Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico.

Spent about 30 mins and then drove on to Monument Valley. Reached by about 1 pm. This place had the most unusual visitor center – went searching around and around but finally never found it – just saw a store and some map. Anyways, figured out enough that there was a 17 mile unpaved road around few of what are called Buttes that make up the Monument Valley. Ventured into the unpaved road. It was pretty slow mainly due to the unpaved road but the views of the Buttes were magnificent – Camel, 3 sisters and Elephant Buttes were notable. After about 1 hr, we headed back since we had had enough, and we still had a long way to go.

After 2 more hrs, stopped at the city of Page to have lunch at McD (Paavani) and Subway. Entire journey was good since it was in daylight and we could enjoy the beauty all around. Sometimes it was filled with snow and sometimes it petered out. It was as if we were in the desert, more like in Mars, and only civilized thing was the road. Otherwise it seemed lifeless all around. Empty and long stretch of roads with visibility of few miles ahead in a straight line) tempted anybody to drive over 100. I guess for the first time in my life I touched 110 mph at one stretch. However, there were stretches where it was snowing and the slush from the vehicle ahead and vehicles on the side splashed all around and the car was a total mess. In some ways, it was quite a challenging drive, especially to pass another vehicle during snow and on icy roads.

Then, left Page to Kanab where we had booked the Royal Inn hotel. About 45 mins of journey but it was already nightfall. Wished I had left Page earlier since there was a view of the dam (like Hoover dam) which I missed immediately after the city of Page. Reached Royal Inn at about 8, and retired. Rather liked Super 8 more than Royal Inn especially since cost of all of them were in the range of 50-60 USD.

Day 4: Took it easy. After a nice breakfast, left at 11 to Bryce national park. So reached about 12.30 pm. Spent about 30 mins in the visitor center which is very informative, even including a 20 minute video that shows Bryce in all it’s splendor. This too has a 17 odd mile stretch of road with full of view points. Saw all view points. Again, Paavani had slept off and hence had to hurry up on some of the view points. Snow added a lot of oooh to the view and one could imagine how dry and simple-rock-like these natural formations would look like in summer.

Bryce was different. Main scenic points are the sunset and sunrise points which showcases the true splendor of the natural amphitheater. A short hike is needed, especially for the sunrise point. But its worth it. After sunset and sunrise points, most other view points are mediocre, except Natural Bridge which looks like another Arch from Arches. Finally, we left in the evening and headed to Springdale.

Now, I had read about the fact that it is good to drive to Zion from Bryce instead of the other way round, just because views are great. It was one of the reasons we had planned the itinerary - so that we come to Zion from Bryce. Now what we did not know was that city of Springdale is within the Zion park itself. So when we drove from Bryce to Springdale, we actually had to pass through the park’s entry and since it was already nightfall, we missed the views. We could feel that we were amidst great mountains but we just couldn’t see it. The road is very very narrow and winding with mandated speeds as low as 20 mph but it was so dark that we couldn’t see anything. It was a thing which I repented a lot. Especially after having it read and planned accordingly.

Anyways, finally reached Quality Inn at about 8 pm. For the price of 80, it had good spacious room. Retired for the night.

Day 5: Woke up amidst mountains! Realized that Springdale is set amidst tall and towering mountains. They were really massive. If all these days we were in the middle of a desert, this was as if we were in the middle of mountains. 360 degrees we were covered with tall mountains. Visited Visitor center to ask what we could do, considering the cold and toddler. We were given few options but here in Zion, most of the viewpoints need quite a bit of a hike.

I had a lot of hope on visiting the Narrows – to see the view of the river in the gorge-like scenario, very much like those Enid Blyton novels which I had read and envisioned as a kid – especially the River of Adventure. Alas, due to weather, they had closed the last part of the trek. So after 45 mins of trek, we had to venture back. I was disheartened. But the trek and the views were great nevertheless.

Other treks which I had a lot of desire could not be achieved because of a number of factors – treks such as Angel’s Landing, Wailing Rock, etc. Anyways, had enough of Zion. For satisfaction, went back on the road to Bryce to experience the Zion views from the top. Midway through, there was a traffic jam near the tunnel. So turned back and that was pretty much about Zion. Lunched in a Thai restaurant in Springdale and headed down South to Las Vegas.

Quite unexpected, the road to Vegas was breath-taking, especially one stretch. This stretch of road winds through multiple mountains – but unlike the other similar drives we had done in the last week, this stretch was on an interstate road, with 65 mph speed. So it was different and a very good drive. As we neared Vegas, traffic thickened but finally we reached Riviera at about 6 pm. We had gained an hour since we were now in Pacific Time Zone.

To enjoy the lights, took Paavani on a car drive around the Strip – maybe it was a mistake, maybe not. Especially since she was too sleepy to see all the lights. Could not show her the Bellagio fountain either. Had a nice Indian restaurant within Riviera where we had good Indian dinner (and next day’s breakfast too) – after a long gap. Relaxed for the night.

Day 6: Checked out in the morning at 11. Was not quite happy with Riviera’s ‘Resourt-fee’. This turned out to be the costliest hotel in the entire trip and it was the least clean of them all. Anyways, whatever.

Showed couple of shows to Paavani at Circus-Circus casino and played few games. Shopped around the strip some more, and it was time to leave Vegas. Returned the rental car, realized that we had lost a cell phone, and finally took the shuttle to airport. With car-seat and a check-in baggage, it was pretty overbearing but somehow managed it. Took the flight to LAX which was a short 1 hr duration. Reached LAX by 8 pm. Had booked a shared van to back home and it was pretty tiring. Realized that I could have driven home faster from LAS than the flight to LAX and this shared cab to the Irvine home. Finally reached home by 11 pm.

Overview: It was a memorable trip. We might have planned for over 6 days for this 6 day trip! But planning was very crucial, especially with the toddler – to pack all her toys, her phone, her laptop, her potty, her favorite food items, her car seat – to make it as close to her homely env as possible. Planning was also crucial for our chosen itinerary and the cost-effectiveness. All those plans finally paid off and thankfully we were back home safe and sound. Those snow-capped natural formations and deserts are unforgettable and perhaps never-again experience. Utah is definitely a unique and beautiful state in this country! In all, over 1200 miles were driven. Planned route map is attached.

Tip: Some of the most useful websites during planning were Google's Flights and Hotel Finder. Without these, it would have been very difficult indeed!

Big Bear

Time: Nov-22-2012
Place: Big Bear Lake
Company: Mom-in-law, Wife and Daughter
Highlights: In a bid to show snow to mom-in-law, went to this mountain where water from Big Bear Lake is converted to snow for skiiing during off-season. It is still off-season since it has not snowed yet. Pretty much similar to natural snow and environment. Paavani enjoyed playing with snow. Went to couple of skiing resorts with varying range of skiing levels. Then went to Big Bear Lake and Big Bear Mountain to capture breath-taking views of the panorama. A 2.5 hr drive from Irvine home.

Aquarium of the Pacific at Long Beach

Time: Nov-18-2012
Place: Aquarium of the Pacific & Harbor Cruise
Company: Mom-in-law, Wife, Daughter
Highlights: Initially thought this would be a 2-3 hr thing but was exhausted at the amount of exhibits. This took almost all day [from 10 to 4]. Polar problems made me sad. Fishes with what looked like electric signals were amazing. Nature's painting of beautiful colors under the ocean is mesmerizing. Thanks to the aquarium, we get to see what we would otherwise never get to see. After the aquarium, went on a harbor cruise to see in and around Long Beach.

Griffith Park Observatory in LA

Time: Nov-10-2012
Place: Calabasas and Griffith, Hollywood Blvd at Los Angeles
Company: Mom-in-law, Wife and Daughter
Highlights: Aksharabhyaasa for Paavani at Calabasas temple. After the event, went to Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles. First time here. Enormous amount of cars. Had to park the car about 0.5 miles from summit and walk all the way up to the top with Paavani on shoulder. Nice views of Hollywood sign and LA. Saw the sun set too. Then went inside the observatory. Wonderful science exhibits. Then went to Hollywood Boulevard street to show Kodak Theatre and other happenings to Mom-in-law. Third time here. Finally, after a long day, headed back home.

San Diego Zoo

Time: Nov-3-2012
Place: San Diego Zoo & Mt Soledad
Company: Mom-in-law, Wife, Daughter
Highlights: Tried to be as early as possible - especially to beat the traffic from Irvine. Last time we visited Balboa Park, we got stuck in traffic near Carlsbad. So this time, left at 8 and reached by 10. Stayed all day till closure at 5. Thanks to AAA, tickets were little cheaper. Wide variety of animals and attractions to keep everyone occupied all day. Did not take shuttle service and hence walked everywhere. Notable attractions - air tram, welcome bird show, sea lion show, etc. other than the animals, of couse. Paavani slept off at about 4 after watching the elephants. She missed only Giraffe and Hippo. On the way back, also visited Mount Soledad. Very nice view of San Diego freeways and the Pacific from atop.
